NEW COSTUME ALERT! Yep! Guess who’s stepping into Captain Marvel’s bright red kick-ass boots? THIS LADY!!! I decided on Friday to make this for a charity walk I was invited to. I don’t really have any family friendly costumes to wear for these kinds of events, so I decided to change that. And who better than Carol Danvers herself? I mean.. come on. I’m from Boston, i’ve got blonde hair, blue eyes… I’m awesome.. we’re kind of like the same person. haahaha!!! :P I’ll post more progress soon! I’m really proud of how far I got in just a weekend.

(also..yep the buckle is totally the crappy thing I made in my worbla video. I’LL MAKE THE RIGHT ONE I PROMISE)

Juliet is obviously a very body conscious outfit, and it’s no secret that i’m not very comfortable with how my stomach looks. (or my arms.. or my thighs.. blah blah blah) Last year I dedicated myself to get fit for this costume. I worked out often and watched what I ate, and eventually lost a pant size. I wanted to be comfortable enough in my own skin to wear this and be proud of myself. I wanted to prove that I could do what it takes to make myself feel ok with showing off what I am most self conscious about. Yeah.. there were still people calling me “chubby” and comparing me to much more in-shape Juliet Starling cosplayers after I lost weight…but I knew that I had worked hard to get where I was and I was still proud of what I accomplished.

Come children, let Bethany tell you a story.

For the past week I’ve been working on a design project. I work a full-time job so the only time I could work on it was after my regular working hours (where, I work as a graphic designer. And yes… It’s very hard to get yourself motivated to design after you’ve already spent a good 8 hours during the day doing it) This had a tight deadline of a week (I wont go into details about it because it’s not crucial to my awesome story-telling.) But the most important detail was the fact that I HAD to get it done by this morning.

Saturday, I was asked to be a judge for a Free Comic Book Day costume contest, so no matter what I had already made obligations to the store to attend. (Also….pft.. it’s freakin’ free comic book day…Can’t miss that day…pfffff please.) So I saved Sunday to dedicate to knocking out the design. I spent the week prior sketching and making my mood boards, but Sunday was going to be THE day of awesome-tacular design.

So i’m trucking along on Sunday. Busting out some serious design, when it happened….

I designed too hard. My vectors were too complex! It couldn’t handle my swag! Illustrator crashed. And guess who pulled a rookie move and didn’t save her files. THIS KID!

So now It’s about 9PM and i’m back to square 1. I stayed up until 3AM Sunday night. Woke up at 6:30AM (gave myself an extra 30 min than normal woooooo!) Went to work.

The following is a record of how I spent my Monday night. The last night before the deadline. Please pay special attention to the time-stamp of these texts that I sent to my friend who also “understands that design feel”

This one goes out to my homies that knows what it feels like to run on 5 hours of sleep within a 48 hour period. CHAMPS!

Hi Bethany! I was hoping that you'd be able to share some "inside secrets" in regards to your Catwoman cosplay! I really want to do her Arkham version but I'm at a loss of what kind of fabric to use. Do you have any recommendations on the pattern design for her catsuit? Thank you!

oooooh! YES!! Another Arkham lovely! <3 I couldn’t find a fabric that had the right pattern, so I made my own! The hex design is actually hand-cut iron on transfer paper that was darkened with sharpie marker to get it to have a sheen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4MwvC3R2K4« thats the stop motion of me cutting it so people could see the process which took about 2 hours per sheet and there are roughly 12 sheets in total on the suit. (I actually never finished doing the legs…but I got tired and never went back to finish it >__<) The transfer paper I bought was for dark stretchy fabrics. I got it at Michaels craft store (I’m not sure where you are from Anon, but I bet you could also find it on Amazon with a little searching) The material has cracked and flaked a little over time.. but HEY it works! haha. I hope I was able to help you!! ^__^

Killer Frost progress!!! Armor is ready to paint! Still have a lot more to complete, but i’m kind of happy that Boston Comic Con was postponed, because now I’m able to really take my time on this and focus on getting the details right instead of rushing. Killer Frost Makeup Test!!!

Ok so YES this is a test which means I was doing it so that I may learn how to do it better the next time! I’m pleased with the color of the makeup, but I’ve learned that I need to exfoliate and moisturize before putting on body makeup (Especially because i’m using a cake makeup rather than a creme makeup)

I think I may invest in getting light grey contacts.. I was hoping to be able to use my natural color but I think she really has a much lighter eye than I have.

Also I’m happy with my choice in a powder blue wig. It’s not perfectly white, but it’s white enough, with just that hint of icyness that the character has. (The render of her hair in the game is crazy by the way neatherrealm! It don’t make sense! lol)

Hey, I was thinking of doing an injustice killer frost cosplay some time (primary) and saw your progress shots. Got to say THEY LOOK AMAZING! I was wondering if you could give me any advice on how you made the leotard as I have never been able to perfect the shaping :) I look forward to seeing the finished result

YESSS MORE KILLER FROSTS!!!!! I’m super freaking excited to finish this one up. I was bummed I wasn’t able to debut it this weekend at Boston Comic Con (totally understandable.. It was a hell of a week we went through -__-) BUT yes! I’m glad you like it and that there’s a fellow Frost lover out there!!! I actually found this fantastic tutorial over on DeviantArt I followed it until it got to the boning part, which I felt I didn’t really need to do on this suit because of the armor that’s there… *cough* and I was running out of time *cough cough*… BUT anyway! It’s a great way to get started! Hopefully one day we can get Killer Frost vs Killer Frost pics at a con!

Ok, besides the obvious choices of Catwoman and Killer Frost (cosplaying both of them) I actually really enjoyed playing as Aquaman. There’s just something really satisfying about the noise his trident makes…and ya know.. that whole summoning a great white to attack your opponent thing.

DERPS! I forgot to answer the second part of the question. I liked the story mode. I’ve been reading the comics every tuesday and was curious to see how Tom Taylor’s story matched up to the games. It was so quick though!!! I hope they have TONS of downloadable stories to play though
